Mr. Lam Chiu Ying
Lam Chiu Ying is a meteorologist by profession, naturalist by hobbies and conservationist by practice. He was the director of the Hong Kong Observatory 2003-1009 and is the first Hong Kong person elected an Honorary Fellow of the UK Royal Meteorological Society. He is a veteran bird-watcher and a co-author of Birds of Hong Kong and South China, the “bible” of bird-watchers in the region. He is now Honorary President of the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society. His extensive nature-themed travels over several decades have prompted him to appreciate the close relationship among climate, ecology and human societies. He was a founding member and is now chairman of the Hong Kong Countryside Foundation which has been deeply involved in the pioneering project to re-vitalise Lai Chi Wo Village in the past decade. He actively promotes public awareness about climate change and nature conservation and advocates “simple life-style” as a means to avert climate disaster. He is well-known for not switching on the air conditioner and his stance against the attrition of country parks and major reclamation projects. His latest interest is the roadside flora of Hong Kong. for which he maintains an active series “One Flower a Day” on social media.
